Gaper’s Block Drive Thru covers La Cocina de Frida 5403 N. Clark St. Their tenor is like pretty much every other critical review in town: not bad, but we can’t wait ’til they move beyond the provisional menu. So when did we start giving restaurants provisional reviews? I’m sure it has something to do with the mom and pop nature of things. Mom and pop or not, if you ask me to give you money, you better bring the goods. I’m so tired of this whole “soft opening” business. You’re either open or you’re not. And if you’re open and you’re not bringing your A game, you’re cheating your customers, bottom line.

You have a good point, but I still think restaurants deserve a few weeks, maybe a month, to work on their menu and to establish themselves. I too don’t want to give my money to a restaurant that serves bad food, but I think there’s a difference between a restaurant that’s just starting out and has potential and a restaurant that shows no hope of ever improving.
